check what has been done on 1.9.x to understand if we have made improvements on this area, and may be you can port code from 1.9 to 1.8. I will take a look. I was under the impression the testlink doc was the 1.9 api documents. If it works I am more likely to force a migration upto the 1.9 version....

I am still using version 1.8.5. I have looked over the API documentation here: http://testlink.org/api/phpdoc_generated/TestlinkAPI/TestlinkXMLRPCServer.html#methodreportTCResult I have also seen some bugs and posts on how the use of the external ID in the API has caused slowness with large data set...
