Migration of attachments 1.8.5 to 1.9.3

Do I have to copy the whole upload_area from the 1.8.5 directory to the new 1.9.3 directory after I've completed the upgrade? The upgrade didn't prompt for the path of the attachments in the previous version so I don't think it's supposed to copy them.

If I installed on top of the 1.8.5 directory the attachments would probably still remain but the README in 1.9.3 says;
- Using a NEW DIRECTORY (DO NOT OVERWRITE your old installation),

1. we do not encourage to install 1.9.3 over old 1.8.5
2. you have to copy manually and be sure directory permission at operanting system level are OK.
