Cant connect to MySQL during Install

During the automatic install process I get the following error when TestLink tries to make a conection to MySQL.

MySQL Error Message: Cant connect to local MySQL server through socket /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock (2)

Sorry for my ignorance, but would anyone know where Im going wrong?

1. install phpMyAdmin or other PHP based product to verify if you can connect to the DB using PHP.

2. Please add info about: Operating System, MySQL version, PHP Version.

3. look for this error on the MySQL Knowledge base
