strings.txt are not processed

I was able to install TL as new installation (1.7.3)
All went ok. I could see the tables in the DB, I can login through the UI.
But one major thing is missing: all values on the UI that are stored i n strings.txt are not there. So I get a main page that's empty of all text.

Looking the the page's source, I can see the <a href> links, but they contain no text, i.e, <a href="someLink"></a>

Has this been reported before?

I'm running
- PHP. 5.2.1
- mysql 4.1.18
- SunOs (not sure which version, probably 11)

Any clues will be greatly appreciated.

I guess you have something wrong with language configuration. TL without string.txt shows to you "Localize:<string_keyword>" instead of strings.
