Start / Help / Status screen?

I want to add a short help text on the start screen. I can do that by patching gui/templates/mainPage.tpl. But I don't think it's the correct way to do it. And it will not survive an update. Any suggestion how to do it right?
Or it can be a new Feature?

1) Long time ago something similar was requested, and IMHO implemented. Best source of info => mantis.testlink.org, remove the filter that hide close status, and do some searching.

2) If you give a look to config files you are going to find a way to define your own templates to make this kind of customization
