The good news is that the settings to turn off the WSIWYG editors were very simple;
$tlCfg->gui->text_editor['all'] = array( 'type' => 'none');
The bad news is, test case creation is still much slower than it used to be (and nobody is thrilled with the performance of our current version).
Part of the problem I have with this is that when I create a new test case the test suite (2 folders deep) in the navigation pane closes those folders. I have "Update tree after every operation" checked. So I'm forced to open those folders to get to the new test case I just created, click it, the "Create step".

This is just no good. I finally tried beta 5 and was shocked. I even pulled my guys over and showed them how to add, edit, and move steps and they said they won't use 1.9. This is a big let down. Been waiting for the upgrade for a while.
