Help with import; creating duplicate components.

Post by natesi »

Hello all,

My wrist started getting cramped somewhere in the middle of the hundreds upon hundreds of clicks to select/copy/paste from Word into TestLink. It would be sooo nice if the import feature accepted YAML or XML markup in your documents, or something like that, but I digress.

I figured it might be a bit faster to move everything over to Excel from my Word docs and create a CSV that way (maybe save me a hundred or so clicks).

The problem I’m having is that when I import via a CSV, it puts a duplicate component and category in. For example, I already have a component called “Patient Service” with a category of “update”, which has test specs in it. After the import, there was a *new* “Patient Service” category created off the root directory with a “update” category below it. And in there were my imported test cases.

Why isn’t the imported data going into the correct category? See pic for details of what I mean?

By the way, aside from the issue above, does anyone have tips for importing? There’s GOT to be an easier way then dragging all this stuff into Excel and making a CSV.

Thanks,

Sorry about the "&#8211" in the subject of my original post. I pasted my writeup from Word and it didn't like the special characters, which was a double-dash.

Unfortunately, I can't find an edit button to fix it. I might be blind though. Anyway, if a moderator reads this, feel free to fix it up.

CSV import is pretty simple. You could patch it yourself to browse existence of component or accept boring work to move testaces :-(
Anyway a new version 1.7 brings xml import possibility (meantime also simple).

Somebody write .NET application for drag and drop testcases. Browse forum.

I have modified the "Print Test Cases" functionality in 1.6.3 to have a "csv" option in addition to the existing Word and HTML options. In this csv I included all the properties of Components and Categories and I also modified in the Import functionality to take all of these values. This allows me to completely export the test specifications for a product and import the entire set back in.
On the import, I also modified it to do an ***Update*** by default instead of inserting copies.

If you're interested I can get this code to you.
