Let say you write a paper test plan with test cases.
Your test cases will be in separate sections depending on which feature/dialog you're testing. These sections will have sub sections of test cases.
So Component = section
and Category = sub-section.
Product: New Cellphone 1.0
Component: Call History. Categorie's: Outgoing Calls, Incoming Calls, Missed Calls.
Then you place all of your outgoing calls test cases into the outgoing calls category of the Call History component.
and so on......

Mobile Application Test Cases
Thanks Drew,
That really helped to get a basic idea.
I would like you to suggest me more with the scenario below,
Example :
I have a mobile messenger application for multiple platforms (Symbian, Pocket PC, J2ME). For each of the platform, the functionalities remain the same except the UI which differs based on the UI platform (UIQ 3 for sony ericsson, Symbian s60 3rd edition)
Example of functionalities :
Install / Uninstall, Login/Logout, group management, preferences, etc features typically available on an instant messenger application.
Keeping in consideration that one application for multiple platforms/phones, with similar functionalities, could you suggest what should be components, categories, test cases.
Would really appreciate your inputs.
Thanks again.
