how to add values to list type custom field?

how can we add possible values to a list type custom field to get 1 value shown per row?
When creating a new custom field, I chose "list" for "Type" and typed in "1,2,3,4,5" for possible values because I thought each value would show up on each row. But all values "1,2,3,4,5" showed up in 1 row. I tried this "1 2 3 4 5", but again, all values "1 2 3 4 5" showed up in 1 and only row.

In the custom field management page, when you create a custom field
you will see a question mark icon, that launches a help page with the info
