Before testlink, we used MsExcel for testcases, where each product quality manager has his data and metrics.
The testlink choice was made based on: key features (Mantis BugZilla integration, requirements support, TC versioning) and it was freeware.
Configuration and link to Mantis, Bugzilla issue tracking tools were easy.

We are trying to integrate TestComplete with TestLink for automation usage.
Currently we have 3 test projects with of test cases.
