Test Urgency, Priority, Importance

Post by jakcam »

Hello, everybody

I try to use Test Urgency, Priority, Importance, but i'm a little bit lost !!

First of all i don't understand how to use these parameters and how to use it ?

Second I'm trying to use these fields because i'd like to know if it is possible to order Test case by "Test priority" in the view "Test Cases Assigned to me"?
This possibility is already available? or have-i to make an issue in mantis ?

Thanks a lot for the time spent!!!

Best regards,
Guillaume

This will be provide in the next release 1.9 beta 6 (thanks a lot to testlink team)

But i have another question.

Why we cannot have a direct link to execute a Test case in the latest build in the view "Test Cases Assigned to me"?

Best regards,
Guillaume

1. do not think dev team need to explain any choice is made
2. explain why this is needed.
3. think about (nad write down here) how many things has to be setted in order to go to the exec page with all correct setted.

IMHO work is not worth the effort.
As usual you can develop it yourself and post contribution

>> 1. do not think dev team need to explain any choice is made
I don't think dev team has to explain their choice but if someone demand an explanation it will be nice to answer for few reasons (to my mind) :
- Most of time your explanation give us some clue or advice to use Testlink in a better way
- When i request some feature and someone tell me : "no you cannot have this feature", i'd like to know why my request is not a good idea. This learn me for the future to make more reasonable request on the bug tracker.

>>2. explain why this is needed.
For me of course 2 reasons :
1) I don't understant that in the "test execution" context i have a link to test specification it is a little bit confusing to me and some new testlink user
2) I think testors can gain time when execute tests.

>>3. think about (nad write down here) how many things has to be setted in order to go to the exec page with all correct setted.
It is a good answer to my question "Why we cannot have a direct link to execute a Test case in the latest build in the view "Test Cases Assigned to me?"

>>IMHO work is not worth the effort.
Sorry, I don't understant what ouy mean ?

>> As usual you can develop it yourself and post contribution
Yes of course i am totally agree with you, but :
- i try to keep my testlink version as close as possible to the offical testlink version.
- Why develop this feature, if you, the specialist, tell me that is not a good idea! I don't want develop some feature or modified code if if is against the "testlink spirit or rules".

To be clear when i wrote this post, i looked for advice from specialist to you like:
- "ok it is a good idea, make an issue on mantis"
- "ok this is a not so bad idea but we have no time to do this feature" or "it is too much complex to implement this small feature", In this case i can try to develop myself and post contribution if i succeed.
- "no this feature don't respect testlink 'rules' or 'spirit'", in this case i am trust you and do nothing

I repeat don't search to bother dev team or anything else because i am really of the job done here.
I am just trying to help you to make testlink better. So i'm sorry if my question bothered you

Thanks a lot for the time spend.

>> 1) I don't understant that in the "test execution" context i have a link to test specification it is a little bit confusing to me and some new testlink user
people have asked ton of times ' .. I want to edit test spec while executing ...', or '... I want to see more that the test case title when doing this or that...'.
Then IMHO is absolutely far from confusing having a link to test case spec.

>> 2) I think testors can gain time when execute tests.
this is not a reasonable argument (IMHO).
how may time can be saved by tester ?
1. tester use link on main menu to access execution feature - click number 1
2. tester set filter to assigned to me - click number 2
3. tester apply another filter criteria - click number 3

then I suppose tester will continue to test a lot of tests without returning to 'test assigned to me page' => all this dicussion for 2 clicks ?

I can agree that having this link will be a good?/interesting? thing, but IMHO absolutely this feature is not the key to improve testers performance.

>>3. think about (nad write down here) how many things has to be setted in order to go to the exec page with all correct setted.
>>> It is a good answer to my question "Why we cannot have a direct link to execute a Test case in the latest build in the view "Test Cases Assigned to me?
what will happen with navigation tree ?
we will need to find a way to open the tree and higlight the right node ?
these are the problems I see, and I have asked you to do the effort to understand.

>> To be clear when i wrote this post, i looked for advice from specialist to you like:

simply open things on mantis, and we will choose if the request is good or not.
having to read mantis and forum for issues is an effort we can not allow.

because may be others can use it, or we in the future can analise code and choose to add to stable code base.

hope explanation is clear

You explanation is clear and thanks a lot for your reply!
how may time can be saved by tester ?
1. tester use link on main menu to access execution feature - click number 1
2. tester set filter to assigned to me - click number 2
3. tester apply another filter criteria - click number 3
I try to teach this way to my users.
then I suppose tester will continue to test a lot of tests without returning to 'test assigned to me page' => all this discussion for 2 clicks ?
For 2 clicks in my environment, i have already received 40 mails... for this "simple" feature :o !! This is the main reason why i try to request this feature...
I can agree that having this link will be a good?/interesting? thing, but IMHO absolutely this feature is not the key to improve testers performance.
i agree with you!
what will happen with navigation tree ?
we will need to find a way to open the tree and highlight the right node ?
these are the problems I see, and I have asked you to do the effort to understand.
In this way to doing this, it can be very complex effectively, but i requested this feature because i thought that you have done almost the same thing for test specifications without open a tree and highlight the right node.
simply open things on mantis, and we will choose if the request is good or not.
having to read mantis and forum for issues is an effort we can not allow.
Okay, i will do that the next time.

Sorry i have another argument to my request, in the result view reports "Test Result Matric" and "XXX test cases" (for example "Not Run Testcases"), There is already link for executing test case! (Of course without deploy the tree and highlight the right node)

Nevertheless this link disapear for report "XXX test cases" in the version 1.9beta5, i think that i make an issue for this problem.

Have a nice day,
Guillaume
