Custom text areas - rich editing?

If you add a custom text area, you get a simple text area to type into.

Is it possible to add rich editing (lists, hyperlinks, font styles and everything else you get with in-built text areas)?
Could I simply hack the code to replace basic text areas with rich editing text areas, or is the data fundamentally different at the DB level?
