General Questions about 1.7 to 1.8 upgrade

1. Database upgrade 1.7 to 1.8:
This process requires you to upgrade the database. I assume this upgrades the database "in-place" rather than creating a copy. Is that true? If so, and your upgrade fails, I would assume you have to restore the 1.7 database from backup?

2. Migration question 1.7 to 1.8:
The second step is to migrate the data. I assume this is converting the data to the format required in 1.8, rather than migrating it from one place to another. Is this correct?

Yes. You suppose to make backup for a migration failure purpose. The current database is modified then (no other one is created).
